the Puerto Rican National Movement

This exhibit tells the story of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Movement. After four centuries of Spanish colonial rule, Puerto Rico gained sovereignty in 1898, but the United States claimed rule over the island at the end of the Spanish American war. During the early 20th century, the U.S. government exerted authority over Puerto Rico under the pretenses of spreading democracy.
